Overview

Nuptse (7,861 meters) is a striking peak located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, just southwest of Mount Everest. Its name means “West Peak” in Tibetan, as it forms the western part of the Everest–Lhotse–Nuptse mountain wall. Though not an 8000er, Nuptse appears very prominent from Everest Base Camp and often looks taller than Everest from certain angles.

The mountain was first climbed in 1961 by Dennis Davis and Sherpa Tashi during a British expedition. Nuptse is known for its steep, technical terrain, featuring sharp ridges, rock, and ice. The main summit is extremely difficult and is rarely climbed; most ascents are made on the slightly lower west summit.

Nuptse is popular among elite climbers as a training or acclimatization climb before attempting Everest or Lhotse. Despite being under 8000 meters, it is considered one of the most challenging and dangerous peaks due to its avalanche-prone slopes and technical demands.
